New Complete-Data Spaces and Faster Algorithms for Penalized- Likelihood Emission Tomography

چکیده
The classical expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm for image reconstruction suffers from particularly slow convergence when additive background effects such as accidental coincidences and scatter are included. In addition, when smoothness penalties are included in the objective function, the M-step of the EM algorithm becomes intractable due to parameter coupling. Thie paper describes the space-alternating generalized EM (SAGE) algorithm, in which the parameters are updated sequentially using a sequence of small "hidden" data spaces rather than one large complete-data space. The sequential update decouples the M-step, so the maximization can typically be performed analytically. By choosing hidden-data spaces with considerably less Fisher information than the conventional complete-data space for Poisson data, we obtain significant improvements in convergence rate. This acceleration is due to statistical considerations, not to numerical overrelaxation methods, so monotonic increases in the objective function and global convergence are guaranteed. Due to the space constraints, we focus on the unpenalized case in this summary, and we eliminate derivations that are similar to those in [l]. See [2,3] for a more comprehensive literature review, the penalized likelihood algorithms, and experimental results.

Grouped-Coordinate Ascent Algorithms for Penalized-Likelihood Transmission Image Reconstruction - Medical Imaging, IEEE Transactions on
This paper presents a new class of algorithms for penalized-likelihood reconstruction of attenuation maps from low-count transmission scans. We derive the algorithms by applying to the transmission log-likelihood a version of the convexity technique developed by De Pierro for emission tomography. The new class includes the single-coordinate ascent (SCA) algorithm and Lange’s convex algorithm fo...

In this paper, we show that EM algorithms based on smaller complete-data spaces will typically converge faster. We discuss two practical applications of ...

We present a fairly simple procedure for computing new approximations for the pixel variances in images reconstructed by penalized-likelihoodmethods. The method enables the display of variance images, which can provide an indication of uncertainty that may be helpful in medical diagnosis and in evaluation of image reconstruction algorithms. متن کاملA Paraboloidal Surrogates Algorithm for Convergent Penalized-Likelihood Emission Image Reconstruction
We present a new algorithm for penalized-likelihood emission image reconstruction. The algorithm monotonically increases the objective function, converges globally to the unique maximizer, and easily accommodates the nonnegativity constraint and nonquadratic but convex penalty functions. The algorithm is based on finding paraboloidal surrogate functions for the log-likelihood at each iteration:...
